Preparing for the arrival of your little one can be both exciting and overwhelming! One of the most important tasks is to create a comprehensive newborn essentials list that you can cross off items as you purchase or receive. With so many products on the market, it can be challenging to know what truly qualifies as essentials for newborns. To help you navigate this process, I’ve put together a baby essential list as a guide to show you what I used when I was preparing for a newborn.
The Importance of a Newborn Essentials List
A well-thought-out essentials list serves as your roadmap in the early days of parenting. This will not only help you feel prepared but also ensure your baby’s comfort and safety. Having the right items on hand can make those first few weeks a lot smoother.
1. Newborn Clothing Essentials
Newborns need a variety of clothing options. Look for soft, comfortable fabrics that are easy to put on and take off. Some essentials in this category include:
- Onesies: Choose several in various sizes to accommodate your growing baby. My kids lived in these footed onesies for the first few months!
- Sleepers: Opt for zippered or buttoned options for easy diaper changes.
- Hats and mittens: These help regulate your baby’s body temperature and prevent scratching.
2. Diapering: Absolute Essentials for Newborns
Diapers are, without a doubt, one of the top essentials for newborn babies. In addition to diapers, you’ll need:
- Wipes: Gentle, unscented wipes are a must for sensitive skin. I love these gentle wipes from the Honest company.
- Diaper rash cream: This is essential for preventing and treating diaper rash.

My ultimate favorite diapers are the Coterie diapers, they’re fast-wicking, highly absorbent diapers with cleaner, more sustainable ingredients.
3. Feeding Supplies Are One of My Top Newborn Essentials
Whether you plan to breastfeed or formula-feed, having the right feeding supplies is crucial. Your baby essentials list should include:
- Bottles: If you’re bottle-feeding, invest in a few different types to find what works best.
Breast pump: This is essential if you’re breastfeeding and want to store milk. Check with your insurance to see if it covers a breast pump! If not, here’s a good option from Elvie that is handsfree.
Burp cloths: Keep several on hand to catch any spills during feeding. You can never have too many burp cloths! Here’s a pack of 6 from Target for $20.
4. Add Sleeping Arrangements to Your Baby Essentials List
Creating a safe sleep environment is one of the most important essentials for newborns. Make sure you have:
- Crib or bassinet: Choose one that meets safety standards.
Swaddle blankets: These can help your baby feel secure while sleeping. Here’s a pack of 3 swaddle blankets that I loved from Target for under $30.
White noise machine: This can create a soothing environment for your newborn. Here’s a white noise machine option from Target for under $60.
5. Bathing and Grooming: Must-Have Baby Items
Your newborn will need regular baths and grooming. Some must-have items include:
- Baby tub: A small tub or a bath support makes bath time easier. The baby tub I use is under $20 and from Target.

- Gentle soap and shampoo: Look for products specifically designed for newborns. Here’s Johnson’s baby soap for under $5 from Amazon.
- Soft washcloths and towels: These are essential for keeping your baby clean and cozy.
Additional Newborn Essentials
As you finalize your baby essentials list, consider including these additional items:
- Baby carrier or wrap: Great for keeping your baby close while you’re on the go.
- Pacifiers: These can be soothing for some babies.
- Thermometer: A reliable thermometer is essential for monitoring your newborn’s health. Here’s a thermometer from Target for $20.
