Fall is finally here and if you’ve recently had a baby or are expecting, I have created the ultimate baby shopping list for first time moms. Having had my baby in July, I really wish I’d had a list like this to guide me. It’s hard enough figuring out what a newborn needs, but it’s even trickier when the seasons are changing!
Whether you’re a mom who loves sticking to soft neutrals or you’re fully embracing the fall vibes with pumpkins, plaid, and all things cozy, this list has you covered. I crafted it based on items I actually used, and even included a few that are perfectly on-theme for the season of crisp leaves and pumpkin everything.
Baby Clothing Essentials for Fall
As the temps dip, even here in California, layers become your best friend! The temperates can be unpredictable if you wake up and it’s cold but by noon, it’s warm again. All that to say, blankets and long sleeve onesies are newborn clothing essentials for sure. Your baby will need soft, breathable fabrics that also provide warmth.
- Long-sleeve onesies (preferably organic cotton) like these that are unisex and Fall themed on Amazon for $9.
- Footed sleepers or sleep gowns. I used these for both Jules and Jameson because they are soft and have zippers!
- Knit hats to keep the baby’s head warm, especially for early morning walks when it’s cooler outside. These come in a pack of 4 colors of both hats and mittens from Amazon!
- Sweater or light fleece jacket like this one from Target that is $18.
- Mittens not just for warmth but to prevent face scratches. I know I linked the sets above, but here is a set of 6 from Target that are super cute.
Sleep Time Must-Haves
Getting your baby to sleep soundly (and safely) is the goal, right? This part of the baby shopping list for first time moms is crucial because you want your baby to feel comfy and cozy so they will sleep, and not wake you up extra times in the middle of the night.
- Fitted crib sheets (2-3 for easy swaps). Go for soft, breathable fabrics like these as babies have sensitive skin! These come in a set of 2 from Target and has several different color options.
- Swaddle blankets or zip-up swaddles. I love these swaddle blankets from Nordstrom. The quality is unbeatable!
- White noise machine so that your newborn learns to sleep through everything. This one is from Amazon and has lots of different settings. And of course, if you are looking for a portable one this is my tried and true from Amazon.
- Humidifier to combat dry fall air like this Frieda Baby 3-in-1 one from Target as it is a diffuser and night light.
On-the-Go Gear
Fall brings beautiful weather for walks and quick trips, so make sure you’re prepped for safe and warm outings.
- Stroller with a rain cover so that you can continue to go on your walks. This one is universal and is under $10 from Amazon.
- Light weight blanket for breezy days. I love this one that is $7.99 on Amazon and is fall-themed!
- Baby carrier or wrap (great for bonding and keeping warm). I could do a whole blog post about baby carrier and wraps but this is a top-rated one on Target and comes in Fall colors!
Preparing to have a baby can be tricky because there are so many product recommendations out there and you won’t know what your baby likes or doesn’t like until they are actually here. Adding changing seasons onto that makes things even trickier because the weather is unpredictable and we still have warm days in September in California so I didn’t bring out the hats, blankets, etc until later in the year. But it was helpful to have on hand for those one off days so I added them to the ultimate baby shopping list for first time moms because you can never be too prepared.
When creating your registry or making your store runs, refer back to this ultimate baby shopping list for first time moms and adjust it based on when you are expecting your baby and where you live! Remember: you don’t need everything at once. Start with the basics and build as you go!
